Maaperälämmitys, often referred to as ground source heating or geothermal heating, is a renewable energy technology that utilizes the stable temperature of the earth to provide heating and cooling for buildings. The principle behind maaperälämmitys relies on the fact that the ground temperature below the frost line remains relatively constant throughout the year, typically between 7-12 degrees Celsius (45-54 degrees Fahrenheit) in many regions.

The system typically consists of a ground loop, which is a network of pipes buried horizontally or vertically in the earth. In cooling mode, the process is reversed, with the heat pump absorbing heat from the building and transferring it to the fluid in the ground loop, which then dissipates the heat into the earth.
