Maaperägeoterminen refers to the geothermal energy derived from the shallow subsurface of the Earth, typically at depths of a few meters to a few hundred meters. This energy is a result of solar radiation absorbed by the ground surface and heat conducted from the Earth's interior. The temperature in this shallow layer remains relatively stable throughout the year, generally ranging from 7 to 21 degrees Celsius depending on geographic location and depth.

This stable temperature makes maaperägeoterminen systems ideal for both heating and cooling buildings. They function by utilizing a ground loop system, which consists of pipes buried underground. In winter, a heat transfer fluid circulating through the pipes absorbs heat from the ground and transfers it to a heat pump inside the building, which then distributes the heat. In summer, the process is reversed: the heat pump extracts heat from the building and transfers it to the fluid in the ground loop, which then dissipates the heat into the cooler earth.

Maaperägeoterminen systems are known for their high energy efficiency and low operating costs compared to traditional heating and cooling methods. They also offer environmental benefits by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Installation involves excavating the ground to bury the loops, which can be done horizontally or vertically. The initial investment for a maaperägeoterminen system can be higher than conventional systems, but the long-term savings on energy bills and the system's lifespan often make it a cost-effective solution over time.
