Maalityypit are used to assess and plan land use. They help determine the suitability of soil for crops and pastures, forestry, construction, and drainage needs. Management decisions—such as liming, fertilization, irrigation, and drainage improvements—are often based on the identified maalityyppi. Accurate knowledge of soil type supports sustainable farming, environmental protection, and infrastructure planning.

Classification and determination: Maalityyppi is identified through field observations, soil sampling, and laboratory analyses of texture, pH, organic matter, and nutrient status. Variability and limits: A single area can contain multiple maalityyppejä due to microtopography, drainage patterns, and land-use history. Consequently, detailed mapping and site-specific assessment are often necessary for precise land management decisions.
