Mágneslemez, also known as a magnetic disk, is a data storage medium that uses a thin layer of magnetic material on a flat, circular plate to store digital information. The magnetic material is typically applied to a substrate like plastic or metal. Data is written to and read from the surface of the platter by a read/write head that moves across the disk. The disk rotates at high speed, allowing the head to access any part of the storage surface.

The magnetic material on the disk is organized into concentric tracks, and each track is further divided into sectors. Each track and sector combination has a unique address, enabling the storage system to locate and retrieve specific data. The magnetic polarity of tiny regions within the magnetic layer is altered by the read/write head to represent binary digits (0s and 1s).

Mágneslemezek were a foundational technology in early computing and were widely used in hard disk drives (HDDs) and floppy disks. While their prominence has diminished with the rise of solid-state drives (SSDs), HDDs still offer a cost-effective solution for mass storage in many applications. The capacity of a mágneslemez is determined by the density of magnetic particles on its surface and the number of platters used in a drive. Technological advancements have led to significant increases in storage density over the years, allowing for terabytes of data to be stored on relatively small magnetic disks.
