Légkondicionáló, commonly referred to as "légkondi" in Hungarian, is a device designed to cool the air in a confined space. It works by circulating air over a refrigerated surface, which absorbs heat from the air. The cooled air is then blown back into the room. This process is crucial for maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures, especially during hot weather.

The basic components of an air conditioning system include a compressor, a condenser, an expansion valve, and an evaporator. The compressor pumps refrigerant through the system, while the condenser releases heat from the refrigerant to the outside air. The expansion valve reduces the pressure of the refrigerant, and the evaporator absorbs heat from the indoor air.

There are various types of légkondicionáló units available. Window units are self-contained appliances that fit into a window opening. Split systems consist of an outdoor unit containing the compressor and condenser, and an indoor unit with the evaporator and fan, connected by refrigerant lines. Portable units are freestanding and can be moved between rooms, typically venting hot air through a hose to the outside. Central air conditioning systems cool an entire building using a network of ducts.

Beyond cooling, many légkondicionáló units also offer dehumidification capabilities, removing excess moisture from the air. Some advanced models can also heat air, functioning as heat pumps. The efficiency of a légkondicionáló is often measured by its Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), with higher ratings indicating greater energy savings. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning or replacing air filters, is important for optimal performance and air quality.
