Lämpöpuhallin, known in English as a fan heater or space heater, is a portable appliance that generates heat using an electric resistance element and then circulates the warm air into a room using a fan. These devices are commonly used for supplemental heating in small spaces, such as offices, bedrooms, or bathrooms, where central heating might be insufficient or turned off.

The core components of a lämpöpuhallin include a heating element, typically made of nichrome wire or a ceramic material, which heats up when electricity passes through it. A fan, usually a centrifugal or axial type, is responsible for drawing in cooler room air and blowing it across the hot heating element. This heated air is then expelled back into the room. Many lämpöpuhaltimet also feature thermostats to regulate the temperature and safety mechanisms such as overheat protection and tip-over switches to prevent accidents.

Lämpöpuhaltimet are generally easy to operate and can provide rapid localized heating. However, their energy efficiency can be a concern, especially when used for extended periods or to heat larger areas, as they directly convert electrical energy into heat, which is less efficient than other heating methods. They are best suited for temporary or targeted heating rather than as a primary source of warmth for an entire dwelling. Different models offer various features, including multiple heat settings, oscillation for wider heat distribution, and timers.
