A lämmönjohtimen, or heat conductor, is a material that readily transfers thermal energy. This transfer occurs through the vibration of atoms and molecules within the material, and in metals, also through the movement of free electrons. Different materials possess varying degrees of thermal conductivity, a property that quantifies their ability to conduct heat.

Materials with high thermal conductivity are considered good heat conductors. Metals like copper, aluminum, and silver are excellent examples, which is why they are commonly used in applications such as cookware, heat sinks, and electrical wiring where efficient heat dissipation or transfer is required. The presence of free electrons in metals significantly enhances their ability to transport heat compared to non-metals.

Conversely, materials with low thermal conductivity are known as thermal insulators. These materials resist the flow of heat. Examples include wood, plastic, rubber, and air. Insulators are utilized in situations where minimizing heat transfer is crucial, such as in building insulation, handles for hot objects, and protective clothing. The structure of insulators often involves trapped air pockets, which are poor conductors of heat, or molecular bonds that are less efficient at transmitting vibrations. The choice between a heat conductor and an insulator depends entirely on the intended application and the desired thermal behavior.
