Lymfstas is a term that appears in a limited set of medical references to denote a syndrome of impaired lymphatic drainage. In contemporary texts the condition is more commonly described using terms such as lymphostasis or lymphedema, and lymfstas is often treated as a historical or alias designation rather than a distinct, widely recognized disease entity. The word combines a root related to lymph with a suffix implying stagnation.

Causes of lymfstas are similar to those of other lymphatic disorders and include obstruction or disruption of lymphatic vessels and nodes due to surgery, radiation therapy, infections (for example, filariasis), congenital lymphatic anomalies, trauma, or inflammatory scarring. The underlying pathophysiology involves reduced lymph propulsion, accumulation of protein-rich interstitial fluid, and altered immune cell trafficking, which together contribute to swelling and increased susceptibility to infections.

Clinical features typically include persistent swelling or edema in a limb or affected region, a sense of heaviness or fullness, skin changes over time, and an increased risk of recurrent infections such as cellulitis. The presentation often overlaps with other causes of edema, so careful assessment is required.

Diagnosis relies on clinical evaluation supported by imaging and functional studies. Techniques such as lymphoscintigraphy or MR lymphangiography can visualize lymphatic flow and obstruction, while ultrasound or venous Doppler studies help exclude venous disease. Limb-volume measurements may quantify edema.

Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and addressing underlying causes. Core measures include compression therapy, manual lymph drainage, exercise and skin care to prevent infection, and management of contributing conditions. In selected cases, surgical options such as lymphatic bypass procedures or lymphovenous anastomosis may be considered. The prognosis varies with the etiology, duration, and timeliness of treatment.
