Lycaconitine is a diterpenoid alkaloid found in plants of the Aconitum genus, commonly known as wolfsbane or monkshood. These plants are known for their potent toxicity. Lyaconitine is one of the primary toxic compounds responsible for the pharmacological and toxicological effects of aconite. Its chemical structure is complex, derived from the aconine skeleton.

The mechanism of action of lyaconitine primarily involves its interaction with voltage-gated sodium channels. It binds to these channels, altering their gating properties and leading to prolonged depolarization of cell membranes. This disruption in ion channel function affects excitable tissues such as nerves and muscles. Consequently, exposure to lyaconitine can result in a range of symptoms.

Acute poisoning from lyaconitine can manifest with gastrointestinal disturbances like nausea and vomiting, followed by neurological symptoms such as tingling, numbness, and weakness. Cardiovascular effects are also significant, including arrhythmias and hypotension. In severe cases, respiratory paralysis and cardiac arrest can occur, making aconite poisoning a potentially life-threatening condition. Due to its toxicity, lyaconitine and the plants containing it are not used in modern medicine as a therapeutic agent, although historical medicinal uses are documented.
