Laconitine is a toxic alkaloid found in plants of the genus Aconitum, commonly known as monkshood or wolfsbane. These plants are native to the Northern Hemisphere and are recognized for their beautiful, hooded flowers, but also for their potent toxicity. Laconitine is one of the primary toxic compounds responsible for the poisonous nature of these plants, alongside other related aconitine alkaloids.

The compound is a diterpenoid alkaloid, meaning it has a complex chemical structure derived from diterpenes. It is primarily found in the roots and seeds of Aconitum species, but can also be present in other parts of the plant. Laconitine exerts its toxicity by acting as a potent sodium channel blocker. By interfering with the normal function of sodium channels in nerve and muscle cells, it disrupts the transmission of electrical signals.
