Luusoluilla, also known as osteocytes, are the mature cells of bone tissue. They are derived from osteoblasts, which are the cells responsible for forming new bone. Once osteoblasts become embedded within the bone matrix they have secreted, they differentiate into osteocytes.

These cells are located within small cavities called lacunae, which are distributed throughout the bone tissue. Each osteocyte occupies its own lacuna. Osteocytes have long, thin cytoplasmic extensions that reach out through tiny channels called canaliculi, which permeate the bone matrix. These canaliculi connect the lacunae to each other and to the surface of the bone.

The primary function of osteocytes is to maintain the bone matrix. They are thought to sense mechanical stress on the bone and play a role in the remodeling process, which involves the continuous breakdown and formation of bone tissue. Through their network of canaliculi, osteocytes can communicate with each other and with cells on the bone surface, facilitating the coordinated response of bone tissue to various stimuli. They also contribute to the overall health and integrity of the skeleton.
