Luonnonkylmäaineet, or natural refrigerants, are substances found in nature that can be used for cooling processes. Unlike synthetic refrigerants, which are chemically manufactured, these natural substances have a significantly lower global warming potential (GWP) and ozone depletion potential (ODP). This makes them an environmentally friendly alternative in refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

Common examples of natural refrigerants include ammonia (R717), carbon dioxide (R744), and hydrocarbons such as propane (R290) and isobutane (R600a). Ammonia is highly efficient and widely used in industrial refrigeration. Carbon dioxide, with its GWP of 1, is gaining popularity, especially in supermarket refrigeration and automotive air conditioning. Hydrocarbons are commonly found in domestic refrigerators and freezers due to their excellent thermodynamic properties and low environmental impact.

The adoption of natural refrigerants is driven by increasing environmental regulations and a growing awareness of the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While they offer significant environmental benefits, their implementation can sometimes require different system designs and safety considerations due to properties like flammability (hydrocarbons) or toxicity (ammonia). However, ongoing technological advancements are making these systems safer and more efficient, paving the way for a wider use of luonnonkylmäaineet in various applications.
