A lukitusmekanismi, or release mechanism, is a device that enables controlled release from a previously engaged or locked state. It translates a deliberate input into movement of a locking element, allowing access, motion, or separation that was otherwise prevented. Such mechanisms are used wherever controlled, repeatable release is required.

A lukitusmekanismi typically consists of a locking element (such as a bolt, latch, or pawl), a guiding or housing structure, and an actuating mechanism (manual lever or knob, key, button, or electronic solenoid). Interlocks and sequencing devices may be included to prevent release unless specified conditions are met.

Common implementations include mechanical releases that rely on physical motion, electromechanical releases using solenoids or small motors, magnetic releases triggered by external fields, and pneumatic or hydraulic releases that use pressure to move the locking element. Key design considerations include ensuring sufficient release force, durability over many cycles, environmental resistance, tamper resistance, and energy efficiency for active releases. Safety interlocks, fail-secure or fail-safe behavior, and regular maintenance tests are common practices in reliable installations.
