LTO (Linear Tape-Open) is a data storage format and technology developed as an open standard by a consortium including IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Quantum. The format defines cartridge dimensions, data encoding, and drive interfaces intended for scalable, cost‑effective archival and backup storage. Over successive generations, LTO has increased native capacity and transfer rates while preserving a relatively low cost per gigabyte and a long media lifespan when stored properly.
