Lowgear refers to a gear ratio that provides a higher torque output at a lower rotational speed. In mechanical systems, gears are used to transmit power and alter the speed and torque between a driving and a driven component. A low gear ratio is characterized by a larger number of teeth on the driven gear relative to the driving gear. This arrangement results in the driven gear rotating slower than the driving gear, but with a proportional increase in torque.

This type of gearing is commonly found in vehicles, particularly during acceleration from a standstill or when climbing steep inclines. The increased torque allows the engine to overcome inertia and resistance more effectively. In bicycles, lower gears are used for climbing hills, making pedaling easier despite the increased resistance. In industrial machinery, low gears are employed in applications requiring significant force, such as winches, cranes, and heavy-duty presses. The trade-off for increased torque in low gears is reduced speed. Conversely, high gears provide lower torque but allow for higher rotational speeds, which is beneficial for cruising at sustained velocities or when less force is needed.
