Ljusprojektorer, often translated as light projectors, are devices used to project an image or pattern of light onto a surface. The fundamental principle behind their operation involves a light source, a system of optics, and a mechanism to modulate the light. Early forms of projectors, such as magic lanterns, used illuminated transparencies and lenses to create images. Modern light projectors, commonly found in home theaters, classrooms, and auditoriums, typically employ digital technology.

These digital light projectors utilize a microchip that controls the light passing through them. Three main types of digital projection technology exist: Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), Digital Light Processing (DLP), and Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS). LCD projectors use a semiconductor chip containing liquid crystals, which can be individually manipulated to block or allow light to pass, forming the image. DLP projectors use a chip with millions of tiny mirrors that tilt to reflect light towards or away from the lens, creating the picture. LCoS projectors combine aspects of both LCD and DLP, offering high contrast ratios.

The applications of light projectors are diverse. They are essential for displaying presentations, movies, and video games on a larger scale than a typical screen. Beyond entertainment and education, projectors are also used in architectural lighting, stage productions, and even in scientific research for visualizing data. The brightness, resolution, and color accuracy of a projector are key specifications that determine its suitability for different uses. Advancements in projector technology continue to focus on improving image quality, reducing size and power consumption, and increasing connectivity options.
