Literacydependent is an adjective used to describe systems, processes, or activities that require a certain level of literacy to participate in or benefit from them. The term is applied across domains such as education, public policy, health, and information technology to indicate the extent to which reading, writing, and comprehension skills gate access or effectiveness.

In education, literacydependent practices include standardized tests that assume access to reading materials and writing tasks, as well as curricula built around textual instruction. In public policy and services, eligibility criteria, forms, and communications may be literacydependent, potentially excluding individuals with limited literacy. In health communication, patient information, consent forms, and instructions often assume basic health literacy.

In technology and design, literacydependent interfaces and documentation require users to read and interpret text, which can exclude those with low literacy or non-native language proficiency. Consequently, literacydependent approaches are often paired with accommodations, universal design, or alternative modalities such as audio, video, pictorial guides, or plain language.

Measurement of literacy, functional literacy, and health literacy informs assessments of how deeply literacy is embedded in a given system. Critics note that labeling something as literacydependent can mask other barriers (cultural, linguistic, cognitive) and may contribute to stigma. Proponents argue that identifying literacydependence helps target inclusive reforms.
