Lipunan is a Filipino term describing the organized social life of a people—the aggregate of individuals, families, institutions, and shared practices that constitute a community or nation. It encompasses formal structures such as government, education, and religion, as well as informal norms, customs, values, and networks that govern daily life and social interaction.

The word comes from Tagalog lipon, meaning a crowd or gathering, with the -an suffix forming a collective noun. In contemporary usage, lipunan refers to the social whole within which people relate to one another, collaborate, and exercise collective responsibility, often in discussions of public policy, development, and social cohesion.

Understanding lipunan involves examining social structure, roles, and interdependence. It includes issues of social inequality, class, regional differences, and culture, but also mechanisms that bind members together, such as family ties, communal rituals, civility, and civic institutions. Concepts like bayanihan and kapwa are frequently cited as expressions of lipunan in Filipino life.
