Linssystem, commonly written Linsensystem in German, refers to an assembly of optical lenses arranged to modify the path of light and form an image. A linssystem can be a simple, single-lens arrangement or a complex, multi-element design with several lenses separated by precise air gaps. The goal is to achieve a specific imaging performance, including sharpness, magnification, and field of view, while controlling aberrations and light losses.

A linssystem consists of individual lenses made from various materials, often chosen for their refractive indices and dispersion properties. The system includes spacings, an aperture stop to control brightness and depth of field, and mechanical mounts. Modern designs may incorporate aspheric elements, anti-reflective coatings, and sometimes freeform surfaces to improve image quality.

Key performance attributes include the effective focal length, back focal length, entrance pupil, field of view, and the numerical aperture or f-number. Optical designers analyze the system using ray tracing to predict how rays propagate through the lenses and where aberrations occur. Common aberrations addressed in design include spherical, coma, astigmatism, field curvature, and distortion.
