Lineouts are a restart in rugby union used when the ball has gone into touch along the sideline. The ball is thrown back into play from the touchline by the team awarded the lineout. Opponents form two parallel rows, perpendicular to the touchline, creating a corridor through which the ball is thrown straight.

The throw is typically taken by the hooker from the team in possession, and the ball is aimed to reach a jumper or a member of the pack lifted by teammates. Jumpers and lifters work together: jumpers reach for the ball while lifters provide upward support to secure possession. The goal is to win clean possession or create a quick break or set-piece move from the lineout.

Lineouts can be contested or uncontested. Contested lineouts involve both teams attempting to gain the ball, often leading to a maul or a quick pass once possession is established. Uncontested or quick lineouts are used to reduce the time the defense has to set up, or when a team wants to surprise the opposition with an early throw.

Variations include short lineouts, where the throw targets a near jumper, and long or lofted lineouts, where the ball is directed higher to reach a jumper farther away. Teams may also execute a variety of moves, such as receiving a short pass immediately after the catch or developing a planned sequence to move the ball to the backline.

Officials monitor lineouts for infringements such as throwing the ball in straight, lifting restrictions, or not respecting engagement rules. Lineouts are a key element of field territory, possession control, and set-piece strategy in rugby union.
