Lihvimiskettad, or grinding discs, are circular abrasive tools designed for material removal, shaping and finishing on power grinders such as angle grinders and bench grinders. They differ from cutting discs, which are thin and used to slice through material. Grinding discs are mounted on a spindle and rely on abrasive grains bonded to a backing to grind surfaces, deburr edges, or remove excess material.

Grinding discs consist of abrasive grains (for example aluminum oxide, silicon carbide, or ceramic grains) bonded by resin or vitrified binders to a backing, which can be fiber or metal. The discs come in different forms, including flat wheels, depressed-center wheels, and flap discs (abrasive sheets mounted on a disc). Materials to be ground determine the choice of abrasive and grit; softer metals use aluminum oxide, harder materials may use ceramic or diamond/CBN for specialized applications.

Select a disc with the correct diameter and RPM rating for the tool; never use a wheel beyond its speed rating. Inspect for cracks or damage before use and replace if found. Always use guards, eye protection, hearing protection, and a dust mask; avoid side grinding on wheels designed for face grinding; apply light, steady pressure and allow the abrasive to do the work. Follow the equipment and wheel manufacturer’s guidance and applicable safety standards (for example EN or ANSI).
