This ancient practice involves the separation of ethanol from fermented mixtures, such as grains, fruits, or vegetables, by heating and then cooling the vapor. The resulting spirit is typically more concentrated in alcohol than the original fermented liquid.

The history of lihovarnictví dates back centuries, with evidence suggesting its origins in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, though its widespread development is often attributed to medieval alchemists in Europe.
