Lihassäiettä is the Finnish term for muscle fiber. Muscle fibers are the basic cellular units of skeletal muscle tissue. They are long, cylindrical cells that contain multiple nuclei and are filled with myofibrils, which are the contractile elements of the muscle. These myofibrils are composed of repeating units called sarcomeres, the fundamental contractile unit of striated muscle.

There are different types of muscle fibers, primarily categorized as slow-twitch (type I) and fast-twitch (type II) fibers. Slow-twitch fibers are rich in mitochondria and myoglobin, making them efficient at aerobic metabolism and resistant to fatigue. They are involved in sustained, low-intensity activities like maintaining posture and endurance events. Fast-twitch fibers, in contrast, rely more on anaerobic metabolism and can generate force rapidly but fatigue quickly. They are further subdivided into type IIa (intermediate) and type IIx (fastest) fibers, which are important for powerful, short-duration movements such as sprinting and weightlifting.

The arrangement and proportion of these fiber types within a muscle can vary depending on genetics, training, and the specific function of the muscle. This heterogeneity contributes to the diverse range of movements and capabilities of the human body. Muscle fibers are connected by connective tissue, which transmits the force generated by the fibers to the skeleton, enabling locomotion and other bodily functions.
