Lihaskudee, also known as a muscle fiber, is the basic contractile unit of skeletal muscle. Each fiber is a multinucleated cell formed by the fusion of developing myoblasts during embryogenesis. The cytoplasm, or sarcoplasm, contains myofibrils—linear arrays of contractile proteins actin and myosin arranged in repeating sarcomeres that determine the fiber’s structure and function.

Muscle fibers are classified primarily by their contractile speed, metabolic profile, and fatigue resistance. Slow‑twitch (type I) fibers are densely packed with sarcoplasmic reticulum, contain high levels of mitochondria, and rely on aerobic metabolism. They fatigue slowly and provide sustained, low‑force contractions, making them essential for posture and endurance activity. Fast‑twitch fibers are subdivided into type IIa and type IIx (or IIb in rodents). Type IIa fibers are intermediate, possessing both oxidative and glycolytic capacity, while type IIx fibers rely largely on anaerobic glycolysis, generating rapid, powerful contractions that fatigue quickly. The distribution of fiber types varies between muscle groups and can be modulated by training, neuromuscular demand, and hormonal influences.

During contraction, the sliding filament mechanism brings actin and myosin filaments closer, shortening the sarcomere and producing force. Neural input and calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum modulate this process. Muscle fibers also differ in connective tissue arrangement; the perimysium surrounds bundles of fibers (fascicles), and the epimysium encloses the entire muscle.

Rehabilitation and athletic training can alter fiber composition, favoring either endurance or strength adaptations. Understanding the distinct properties of each fiber type is crucial for fields ranging from sports science to clinical neuromuscular research.
