Lignocellulosederived refers to substances, materials, or chemicals produced from lignocellulosic biomass, the plant-based residue rich in cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. This type of biomass comes from agricultural residues, forestry byproducts, dedicated energy crops, and some municipal waste streams. It is considered abundant, renewable, and generally non-competitive with food resources, making it a focus of sustainable bioproduct development.

Conversion of lignocellulosederived feedstocks typically involves pretreatment to disrupt the lignin–carbohydrate matrix and improve access to polysaccharides. In biochemical pathways, enzymes hydrolyze cellulose and hemicellulose to simple sugars, which can be fermented by microorganisms into ethanol or transformed into other value-added chemicals. In thermochemical and catalytic routes, the biomass or its sugars are converted into platform chemicals such as furfural, hydroxymethylfurfural, levulinic acid, and various polyols, or further upgraded into fuels and materials. Lignin can be valorized into phenolic resins, aromatic chemicals, or carbon fibers, while cellulose can yield nanocellulose—cellulose nanocrystals or nanofibrils used in coatings, films, and reinforced composites.

Applications of lignocellulosederived products span biofuels, biochemicals, and biobased materials. Examples include cellulosic ethanol, other fermentative chemicals, nanocellulose for high-performance composites, and lignin-derived polyols or phenolics for adhesives and plastics. The approach aims to diversify biomass use, reduce fossil resource dependence, and improve lifecycle sustainability, though challenges such as processing costs, feedstock variability, and the need for efficient enzymes and catalysts remain.
