Ligamentläsionen, commonly referred to as ligament injuries, occur when ligaments, the tough fibrous tissues that connect bones to each other at joints, are stretched or torn. These injuries are most frequently caused by sudden twisting or impact forces that exceed the ligament's normal range of motion. Common locations for ligamentläsionen include the knee, ankle, and wrist.

The severity of a ligamentläsion is often graded. A Grade I injury involves a mild stretch with microscopic tears in the ligament fibers. A Grade II injury indicates a partial tear of the ligament, resulting in increased pain and instability. A Grade III injury signifies a complete rupture of the ligament, leading to significant pain, swelling, and joint instability.

Symptoms typically include pain, swelling, bruising, and a feeling of instability or looseness in the affected joint. In some cases, a popping sensation may be felt at the time of injury. Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination by a medical professional, assessing the joint's range of motion and stability, and may be complemented by imaging techniques such as X-rays to rule out fractures or MRI to visualize the ligament damage.

Treatment for ligamentläsionen depends on the severity of the injury. Mild injuries may be managed with rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE protocol), along with pain medication. Moderate to severe injuries might require immobilization with a brace or cast, followed by physical therapy to regain strength, flexibility, and stability. In cases of complete rupture or significant instability, surgical intervention may be necessary to repair or reconstruct the damaged ligament. Rehabilitation is a crucial part of recovery to prevent long-term joint problems and ensure a return to normal activities.
