Lichteffects refer to techniques and results achieved through the use of light in visual media. They describe how light sources, reflections, diffraction, and scattering create perceptual changes such as mood, depth, or emphasis.

Lichteffects can be produced in three broad domains: practical lighting in live or on-set environments, post-production or digital rendering, and audience-visible effects in projection or display technologies. In practice, they are used to guide attention, convey time of day, or sculpt form and texture.

Practical lighting techniques include the use of key and fill lights, backlighting, and lighting modifiers such as diffusers, gobos, and cookies to shape beams. Stage and film lighting also employ controlled haze or fog to reveal beams and volume. Color filters, LEDs, and moving lights enable dynamic effects such as color washes, rotating patterns, and stroboscopic flashes.

Digital lichteffects are created with software that simulates lens flares, bloom, glare, volumetric lighting, and shadows, or composes artificial light sources within a scene. In computer graphics and game design these effects enhance realism or stylization.

Applications span photography, cinema, theatre, broadcast graphics, and product visualization. Designers consider safety, flicker, color accuracy, and viewer comfort; excessive or poorly synchronized effects can cause distraction or discomfort.

Historically, experimentation with chiaroscuro and artificial lighting evolved into modern cinematic lighting practices and digital post-processing techniques.
