Lexpérimentation, although correctly written l'expérimentation in French, denotes the systematic process of testing and observing to investigate hypotheses, validate models, or develop solutions. It involves planning, controlled testing, replication, and the use of measurable outcomes to infer causal relationships.

In science, it is part of the empirical method: formulating hypotheses, designing experiments, controlling variables, collecting data, and applying statistical analysis. In applied settings, it includes pilot studies, prototype testing, and field trials to evaluate feasibility, safety, and effectiveness before wide deployment.

Historically, the experimental method emerged in early modern science and gained formal footing with statistics and experimental design in the 18th–20th centuries. Today, lexpérimentation is used across disciplines—physics, biology, medicine, engineering, social sciences—and in policy making, where randomized or quasi-experimental designs test interventions.

Ethical considerations include consent and risk assessment when humans are involved, as well as data integrity and transparency to support reproducibility. Critics warn against overgeneralization from limited trials, selective reporting, and bias. Proponents view experimentation as a disciplined path to knowledge and responsible innovation.
