Leveldegree is a term used to describe a dimensionless index that encodes a position within hierarchical structures such as organizational charts, educational programs, or software gamification schemas. The word is a portmanteau of level and degree and is employed informally in multiple disciplines to enable comparisons across systems with differing depths. It is not tied to a single formal standard, but a common convention is to define it as the ratio of a node’s depth to the maximum depth of the structure containing it.

In education and training, leveldegree may represent depth of mastery within a program. If a learner is at level l in a program whose deepest level is L, a simple definition is leveldegree = l / L. An alternative, to avoid zero values at the root, uses leveldegree = (l+1)/(L+1).

In software and gamification contexts, leveldegree serves as a progress indicator that can inform rewards, access rights, and interface customization. For multi-branch structures, the degree can be generalized by aggregating branch depths, for example by taking the average of l_i / L_i across branches i, or by defining leveldegree as the maximum depth ratio along any path.
