Leveldegree

Leveldegree is a term used to describe a dimensionless index that encodes a position within hierarchical structures such as organizational charts, educational programs, or software gamification schemas. The word is a portmanteau of level and degree and is employed informally in multiple disciplines to enable comparisons across systems with differing depths. It is not tied to a single formal standard, but a common convention is to define it as the ratio of a node’s depth to the maximum depth of the structure containing it.

In education and training, leveldegree may represent depth of mastery within a program. If a learner is at level l in a program whose deepest level is L, a simple definition is leveldegree = l / L. An alternative, to avoid zero values at the root, uses leveldegree = (l+1)/(L+1).

In software and gamification contexts, leveldegree serves as a progress indicator that can inform rewards, access rights, and interface customization. For multi-branch structures, the degree can be generalized by aggregating branch depths, for example by taking the average of l_i / L_i across branches i, or by defining leveldegree as the maximum depth ratio along any path.

Computation and variants: The most common variant normalizes depth within a single hierarchy; for multiple hierarchies, leveldegree may be computed as an average or a weighted average. Some implementations incorporate ordinal steps or non-linear scaling to emphasize earlier or later progress.

Use and interpretation: A higher leveldegree indicates a deeper position within the hierarchy and, in many designs, greater progression toward the top level. Because it is normalized, leveldegree enables comparisons across structures with different maximum depths. Limitations include sensitivity to how depth and levels are defined and potential misinterpretation if the structure is non-hierarchical or highly unbalanced.
