It is described as the native tongue of the Lengata people, who are said to inhabit the island of Lengata in the Archipelago of Varion. In its canonical descriptions, Lengata functions as an agglutinative language with a primarily subject–object–verb (SOV) word order, and it is characterized by rich verbal morphology and systematic noun marking. The language is typically depicted with vowel harmony, extensive affixal paradigms for tense, aspect, mood, and evidentiality, and a robust case system that marks grammatical relations on nouns. While diverse in its hypothetical dialects, the core grammar provides a consistent framework for storytelling and worldbuilding.

Phonology and syntax are described as relatively conservative, with a five-vowel system and a consonant inventory that includes stops p, t, k; nasals m, n; fricatives s, h; and liquids l, r.
