Leitmotívum (also spelled leitmotif, leitmotiv or leitmotive) denotes a short, recurring musical idea associated with a person, place, object, emotion or concept within a larger work. Originating in 19th-century German musical drama, the technique is most closely associated with Richard Wagner, who used interconnected motifs to bind the narrative and musical structure of his operas, especially the Ring Cycle.

In practice a leitmotif can be melodic, harmonic, rhythmic or timbral and is often varied, fragmented or transposed to reflect changing dramatic contexts. Its functions include character identification, thematic unity, foreshadowing, and signposting psychological or narrative developments without explicit words. While rooted in opera, the device appears widely across art forms: symphonic works, ballet, film scores, television, video games and literary leitmotifs in recurring images or phrases.

Notable modern examples include John Williams’s themes in film (Star Wars, Indiana Jones), which assign distinct motifs to characters and ideas, and film-score practices that adapt Wagnerian principles for visual media. Critics and scholars distinguish a leitmotif from a simple theme by its associative and developmental role rather than mere repetition. The term as used in various languages may carry different nuances; in Hungarian, leitmotívum is the common form. The concept remains a central tool for composers and creators seeking cohesion and narrative resonance through recurring musical or symbolic material.
