Legendek, the Hungarian term for legends, are traditional narratives associated with a culture’s memory, describing real places, people, or events with elements of both fact and fiction. They are usually transmitted orally across generations and later collected in written form. Legendek claim a basis in historical reality, even when details are uncertain, and they often serve to explain local customs, landmarks, or collective identity. They differ from myths, which address cosmological origins, and from fairy tales, which emphasize magical or fantastical worlds.

Historically, the genre has roots in Latin legendarum literature; the term legenda comes from Latin legenda “things to be read” and was used for hagiographies. The medieval Legenda aurea (The Golden Legend) by Jacobus de Voragine is a landmark text that shaped European hagiography and the spread of legend-based storytelling. In Hungarian usage, legenda or legend labels saints’ lives as well as local tales connected to places and communities.

Functions and motifs: Legends often explain the origins of place names or customs and transmit moral, religious, or communal values. Common motifs include miraculous events, heroic deeds, curses, and the interaction between humans and the sacred. They reflect regional histories, dialects, and memory, and they can be preserved in folk songs, writings, or oral performance. In modern contexts, legendek persist as urban legends (városi legendák) and in popular culture, where traditional frames are used to comment on contemporary concerns.
