Leerbewerking is the process of transforming animal hides and skins into leather. This involves several stages, beginning with the preparation of the raw hide, which is often preserved to prevent decay. The initial steps typically include soaking the hide to rehydrate it and then dehairing and fleshing to remove unwanted material.

The core of leather processing is tanning, a crucial step that stabilizes the hide's protein structure, preventing putrefaction and making it durable and flexible. Traditional tanning methods often utilized vegetable tannins derived from tree bark and other plant sources. Modern tanning frequently employs chrome salts, a process known as chrome tanning, which is faster and produces a softer, more pliable leather. Other tanning methods, such as aldehyde tanning or oil tanning, are also used for specific types of leather.

After tanning, the leather undergoes further treatments. This can include retanning, dyeing to impart color, and fatliquoring to introduce oils and fats, which enhance the leather's softness and suppleness. Finally, the leather is dried and finished. Finishing processes can involve applying coatings, embossing patterns, or buffing to achieve the desired surface texture and appearance. The resulting leather can then be used in a wide range of products, including footwear, clothing, upholstery, and accessories.
