Leaseend refers to the conclusion of a lease agreement for a rental property. It denotes the date by which the tenant must vacate unless the parties have agreed to renew, extend, or otherwise continue occupancy. In many leases the end date is clearly stated as the lease expiration date, sometimes called the lease end date or term end.

End-of-lease procedures typically begin with notice. Tenants are usually required to provide written notice of their intent to vacate by a specified deadline before the lease ends. Landlords may also need to issue notices to terminate the agreement if neither party renews. If the tenant stays beyond the end date without a new agreement, a holdover tenancy may occur, often with different terms and possibly higher rent.

Move-out and condition: Before moving out, tenants should remove personal property, clean the unit, and repair damage beyond normal wear and tear. Landlords commonly perform a move-out inspection to assess the unit’s condition and to determine whether any security-deposit deductions are warranted.

Financial consequences: Security deposits are typically returned after the property is inspected, less any legitimate deductions for unpaid rent or damages. The timeline and required itemization of charges vary by jurisdiction and the lease terms.

Renewal and alternatives: At lease end, the parties may renew the lease, extend it for another term, negotiate a new agreement with different terms, or terminate the tenancy. Subletting or temporary extensions may be possible with landlord consent.
