Layout spacing refers to the use of white space, or negative space, within a design to create visual hierarchy, improve readability, and enhance the overall aesthetic. It is a fundamental principle in graphic design, web design, and user interface (UI) design. Proper spacing guides the viewer's eye, separates distinct elements, and prevents a cluttered or overwhelming appearance.

There are several key aspects to layout spacing. Margins are the spaces around the outer edges of a page or element. Padding is the space between the content of an element and its border. Gutter is the space between columns of text or other content blocks. Line spacing, also known as leading, is the vertical space between lines of text.

The strategic application of spacing can significantly impact user experience. Adequate line spacing makes text easier to read by preventing ascenders and descenders from overlapping. Generous margins and padding help to define and isolate individual components, making it easier for users to understand the relationships between different parts of a design. Consistent spacing across a design creates a sense of order and professionalism.

Conversely, insufficient spacing can lead to a crowded and difficult-to-navigate interface. Too much spacing, while generally less problematic than too little, can sometimes make elements feel disconnected or the design appear sparse. The goal is to find a balance that optimizes clarity and visual appeal.

Different design contexts may call for different spacing strategies. For example, a print brochure might utilize different spacing than a mobile app interface. However, the underlying principle of using space intentionally to improve communication and aesthetics remains consistent across all forms of layout design.
