A lava field, also known as a lava plain or malpais, is a large, flat area of land covered by solidified lava. Over time, vegetation may begin to colonize lava fields, although the process is often slow due to the poor soil quality and the harsh conditions. Pioneer species like lichens and mosses are typically the first to establish themselves, followed by more hardy plants. These plants help to break down the rock, creating soil and gradually transforming the barren landscape.
