Typically, lasersäätimet consist of a laser diode driver with an adjustable current limit, a temperature controller (often a thermoelectric cooler with a temperature sensor), and a monitoring photodiode that feeds a feedback loop. The regulator adjusts the drive current and the temperature setpoint to keep the measured optical power near a reference value. In many systems the regulation is implemented with analog circuitry or digital controllers, and may include safety interlocks and protections against overcurrent or overtemperature.

Modulation and control: Lasersäätimet can apply high-speed modulation by varying current or by interfacing with external modulators. Control signals may be analog (for example 0–5 V) or digital (USB, Ethernet). Key specifications include regulation accuracy, noise, and bandwidth.
