Lasermittarit, also known as laser distance meters or laser rangefinders, are handheld electronic devices that determine the distance to a target by emitting a laser pulse and measuring the time it takes for the reflection to return. They are used in construction, architecture, interior design, and surveying because they provide quick, non-contact measurements.

Operation and principles differ by model. Most consumer units use time-of-flight (ToF), sending short laser pulses and calculating distance from the return time. Some high-end or specialized meters use phase-shift methods with continuous-wave lasers. Wavelengths are typically in the near-infrared range (roughly 635 to 940 nanometers). Measurements are usually displayed in meters or feet, with some devices offering indirect calculations using inclinometer data to obtain horizontal or vertical distances via Pythagoras.

Performance varies by target and conditions. Common consumer meters measure from a few centimeters up to about 60 meters, while higher-end models can reach 100–200 meters under favorable lighting and reflective targets. Accuracy is typically around ±1–3 millimeters for precise units, and somewhat less for cheaper models. The measurement time is often near-instant, within a fraction of a second.

Features commonly include area and volume calculations, minimum/maximum measurements, continuous measurement, memory storage, and Bluetooth or app connectivity. Many models incorporate a tilt sensor to enable indirect distance calculations on sloped surfaces.

Safety considerations are important: most Lasermittarit use Class II/Laser safety wavelengths, presenting minimal risk with normal use, but direct eye exposure should be avoided.

History and use: laser rangefinding emerged from military applications and evolved into affordable consumer tools in the late 20th century, expanding into professional and DIY domains.
