Laryngoscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the larynx, commonly known as the voice box. This examination allows physicians to visualize the vocal cords and surrounding structures to diagnose and assess various conditions affecting the voice, breathing, or swallowing.

There are several types of laryngoscopy. Direct laryngoscopy involves the use of a rigid laryngoscope, a metal tube with a light source, which is inserted into the pharynx to provide a direct view of the larynx. This method is often performed under general anesthesia and is frequently used for surgical interventions like biopsies or polyp removal. Indirect laryngoscopy, on the other hand, utilizes a mirror placed at the back of the throat to reflect light onto the larynx, allowing visualization. This is a less invasive technique typically done in an office setting. Flexible laryngoscopy employs a thin, bendable tube with a camera and light attached, which is passed through the nasal passage and down into the throat. This method is well-suited for evaluating patients with gag reflexes or those who cannot tolerate direct laryngoscopy.

Indications for laryngoscopy include hoarseness, persistent cough, difficulty swallowing, unexplained throat pain, and suspected tumors or lesions in the larynx. The procedure can also be used to assess airway patency, especially in cases of trauma or suspected obstruction. While generally safe, potential risks include minor bleeding, temporary sore throat, or gagging. Serious complications are rare.
