Laryngitis, commonly referred to as laryngitis, is an inflammation of the larynx, which is the voice box located in the neck. This condition can cause hoarseness, weakness, or loss of voice due to irritation or swelling of the vocal cords. Laryngitis is often caused by viral infections, such as the common cold or flu, but it can also result from bacterial infections, overuse of the voice, exposure to irritants like smoke or chemicals, acid reflux, or allergic reactions.

Symptoms of laryngitis typically include hoarseness or voice changes, a dry or sore throat, and sometimes a persistent cough. In some cases, individuals may experience difficulty swallowing or breathing, though these are less common. Acute laryngitis usually resolves within a few days to two weeks, while chronic laryngitis may persist for longer periods, often requiring medical evaluation to identify underlying causes such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or vocal cord misuse.

Treatment for laryngitis focuses on relieving symptoms and allowing the vocal cords to heal. Resting the voice, staying hydrated, and avoiding irritants like smoke or excessive alcohol and caffeine are common recommendations. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help reduce discomfort. In severe cases, a doctor may prescribe corticosteroids to reduce inflammation or antibiotics if a bacterial infection is suspected. Most cases of laryngitis improve without medical intervention, but persistent symptoms warrant further medical assessment to rule out more serious conditions.
