Land grant refers to a grant of land by a government or other authority to a person, organization, or community for a stated purpose. The grant may convey title for a defined period or in perpetuity, and recipients are typically expected to use or develop the land in line with specified public or communal objectives. Land grants have been used worldwide to promote settlement, education, infrastructure, and development. Terms and conditions, including restrictions on alienation and reporting, vary by jurisdiction.

In the United States, land grants became a central policy tool in the 19th century. The Morrill Act of 1862 granted federally owned lands to states to fund colleges of agriculture and the mechanical arts, creating the modern network of land-grant universities. Later laws expanded agricultural research and extension services (the Hatch Act of 1887 and the Smith-Lever Act of 1914).

Separately, the federal government used land grants to promote infrastructure and settlement, including transfers of land to railroad companies for line construction in the 19th century. In Canada, the Dominion Lands Act helped settle the western provinces by allotting land to homesteaders. Other nations have employed land grants for universities, housing, or colonial administration.

Today, land-grant arrangements involve complex legal frameworks, with oversight shared among federal, state or provincial authorities and designated institutions. They are a notable historical model of public land used for public benefit, though disputes over land rights, indigenous claims, and long-term stewardship can arise.
