Lakótelepek, often translated as housing estates or residential areas, are a common feature of urban and suburban landscapes, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe. These large-scale housing projects were predominantly built during the socialist era, from the mid-20th century onwards, to address housing shortages and provide standardized living conditions for a growing population. The typical lakótelep consists of a collection of multi-story apartment buildings, often constructed from prefabricated concrete panels, arranged in a relatively uniform manner.

The design of these estates often prioritized functionality and mass production. While they provided much-needed housing, they also presented challenges related to social cohesion, urban aesthetics, and environmental quality. Over time, many lakótelepek have undergone various forms of renovation and redevelopment, aiming to improve their living standards, energy efficiency, and public spaces. Despite their common origins, individual lakótelepek can vary significantly in their architectural style, size, and the quality of their surrounding infrastructure and amenities. They represent a significant part of the built environment and housing stock in many post-socialist countries, continuing to evolve and adapt to contemporary needs.
