Laboratorioreaktori (laboratory reactors) are small-scale devices used in chemical and biochemical research to perform controlled reactions under defined conditions. They enable study of reaction kinetics, heat and mass transfer, and catalyst performance in a safe, cost-effective environment before scaling up to pilot or industrial equipment. They are common in universities, research institutes, and industry for discovery, education, and development work.

Common configurations include batch reactors for discreet experiments; continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTRs) and plug-flow reactors (PFRs) for steady-state studies; and microreactors for rapid screening and precise control at very small scales. Other forms, such as fixed-bed or slurry reactors, are used for heterogeneous catalysis.

Laboratorioreaktori are operated with precise temperature control, pressure management, and controlled mixing. They may include inert atmospheres, solvent systems, and in situ analytical tools to monitor composition and temperature. Safety features such as containment, venting, and appropriate shielding are integral.

Applications span fundamental kinetics, catalyst testing, formulation work, and process development for pharmaceuticals, polymers, and specialty chemicals. Data from laboratory reactors inform scale-up and pilot plant design, though scale-up remains challenging due to changes in heat transfer and mixing at larger sizes.
