They may work for banks, insurance firms, or independent advisory practices. Typical duties include assessing client goals, recommending financial products or strategies, monitoring portfolios, and ensuring regulatory compliance. The exact title and responsibilities vary by organization; PFR can be one internal designation for client-facing financial professionals rather than a universal standard.

Because PFRs can denote different concepts in different fields, the intended meaning is usually clear from the surrounding context.
