Laattakiinnitys refers to the process and materials used to adhere tiles to a substrate. This is a crucial step in tiling work, ensuring the tiles remain securely in place and form a durable surface. The primary method involves using an adhesive, commonly known as tile grout or tile adhesive.

The choice of adhesive depends on several factors, including the type of tile, the substrate material, and the intended location of the tiling. For ceramic and porcelain tiles, cement-based adhesives are widely used. These are typically mixed with water or a latex additive to achieve the desired consistency and bonding strength. For natural stone tiles, which can be more porous and sensitive to moisture, epoxy-based adhesives or specialized thin-set mortars are often recommended.

Substrates must be properly prepared before applying laattakiinnitys. This usually involves cleaning the surface to remove any dust, grease, or loose material. For porous substrates like concrete or plaster, a primer may be applied to improve adhesion and prevent excessive absorption of water from the adhesive. In areas prone to moisture, such as bathrooms and kitchens, a waterproofing membrane is often installed before tiling.

The adhesive is typically spread onto the substrate using a notched trowel. The size and spacing of the notches are critical for ensuring an even layer of adhesive and proper coverage of the tile's back. The tiles are then pressed firmly into the adhesive, often with a slight twisting motion to maximize contact. Excess adhesive that squeezes out between the tiles is then removed. Once the adhesive has cured, typically within 24-48 hours, the tiles are ready for grouting.
