LMHC stands for Licensed Mental Health Counselor, a professional license in many U.S. states that authorizes independent practice of mental health counseling within a defined scope of practice. The title and requirements vary by state, but common elements include a graduate degree in counseling or a closely related field, supervised clinical experience, and a licensure examination.

Education and licensing requirements: Most LMHC pathways require a master’s degree in counseling or a related field, plus a period of supervised clinical experience (commonly 2,000–4,000 hours). Candidates must pass a licensure exam, such as the National Counselor Examination (NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE), and may undergo background checks. Licenses require periodic renewal with continuing education.

Scope of practice: LMHCs provide assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for mental and emotional disorders in individuals, couples, families, and groups.
