Läpimenoon is a Finnish term used primarily in manufacturing, operations research, and information technology to denote throughput—the rate at which a system processes inputs into outputs. The word combines läpi (through) and meno (movement or process), reflecting the idea of moving inputs through a process to outputs.

In manufacturing and production planning, läpimenoon is measured as units produced per time period (for example, units per hour) and is influenced by cycle times, setup times, downtime, and variability. It is distinct from efficiency or yield, as throughput focuses on the actual rate of completed output rather than potential capacity. Bottlenecks are critical in determining maximum throughput; methods such as line balancing, bottleneck management, and Lean manufacturing aim to maximize läpimenoon.

In information technology and data processing, läpimenoon describes how many transactions, messages, or data items a system can process per second. Factors include hardware performance, software efficiency, input/output bandwidth, and the degree of parallelism. Optimization approaches encompass caching, parallel processing, queue management, and performance tuning.

Contextual uses of the term also appear in supply chains and logistics, where throughput relates to the flow of goods from suppliers to customers, and in project management to describe the rate at which work items are completed.
