Külmetustest is the Estonian word for the common cold. It is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract, primarily affecting the nose and throat. While often used interchangeably with the term "flu," the common cold is generally a milder illness caused by different viruses. There are over 200 different viruses that can cause a cold, with rhinoviruses being the most frequent culprits.

Symptoms of a cold typically appear one to three days after exposure to the virus and can include a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, sneezing, mild body aches, and sometimes a low-grade fever. These symptoms are the body's immune response to the infection. Colds are highly contagious and spread through airborne droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, as well as through direct contact with contaminated surfaces.

There is no cure for the common cold, and antibiotics are ineffective against viruses. Treatment focuses on managing symptoms and allowing the body to fight off the infection. This often involves rest, staying hydrated with fluids like water and herbal teas, and using over-the-counter medications to relieve pain, fever, and congestion. Prevention strategies include frequent hand washing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and not touching one's face. Most colds resolve within a week or two.
