Külgstabiilsus refers to the ability of an object, particularly a vehicle, to resist overturning or rolling sideways. This concept is crucial in engineering and design, especially for structures and transportation systems that operate on uneven terrain or at high speeds. For vehicles, külgstabiilsus is influenced by factors such as the vehicle's center of gravity, its track width (the distance between the wheels on the same axle), and its suspension system. A lower center of gravity and a wider track width generally contribute to better külgstabiilsus.

When a vehicle turns, centrifugal force acts outwards, creating a moment that tends to tip the vehicle. The vehicle's own weight, acting through its center of gravity, creates a counteracting moment. If the tipping moment exceeds the stabilizing moment, the vehicle will roll over. This is why vehicles with higher centers of gravity, like trucks and buses, are more susceptible to rollovers, especially during sharp turns or when heavily loaded.

In shipbuilding, külgstabiilsus is equally important, ensuring that a vessel remains upright and does not capsize. Factors like the hull shape, the distribution of weight (including cargo and ballast), and the presence of ballast tanks play a significant role. Maritime engineers use complex calculations and stability curves to assess and ensure adequate külgstabiilsus for various sea conditions. The principle is similar to that of vehicles: a lower center of gravity relative to the vessel's metacenter (a point related to buoyancy) enhances stability.
